If equipped with proper sitting arrangements, this design will provide great ambiance for the regular coffee breaks as well. If you are revamping the kitchen, this design will cost you the least and give the kitchen a classy look as well. So, if you have less space in your kitchen and cannot incorporate a separate breakfast bar, this is the design for you.
If you need storage, opt for one with lots of drawers and closed shelves. The accessories to the island are also important, like a stove, sink, etc. Are you planning to place a microwave over it? Are you going to have stools around? One idea is to fix the electric switches and outlets for the appliances on the side walls of the island, which provide great convenience. Most of the time the exhaust hood is also included depending upon its usage.
Though an island counter should ideally blend with the rest of the design, there is no harm in giving it a dash of color to have it stand out a little. The idea is to strike a balance so that it looks like a part of the décor, yet has its own identity amid the rest of the kitchen.
How about combining your personal bar with the kitchen island? It can save a lot of space and also give an elegant look. Bar top kitchen islands can be used to place your wine bottles and stemware along with the food served. Some islands are equipped with cabinets for storing all the bar accessories, and also provide enough working space. You can also place a wine rack on the island top for your guests.
When other elements are finalized, it‘s time to look at the material to be used. This will mainly depend on your budget. If the budget is not a problem, you can go for the best material for making one. There are also those available at a lesser cost. Perfect laminate or wood finish, decorative drawers and cabinet handles, and an elegant counter top will give a posh look to the island. Make sure that the counter top is exactly the same as your existing kitchen counter top. Also the laminate used needs to match the existing cabinets and furniture in case of remodeling. For outdoors consider the type of outdoor furniture placed around. The counter top will essentially be a few inches larger than the base. Make sure the borders and corners are well finished.
You can opt for colored laminates perfectly matching with laminates used for the rest of the cabinets and furniture pieces in the kitchen. Also, make sure that you try to maintain uniformity in countertop type and color. Else, adding countertops like glass or stainless steel is also a great idea as these go with any type of existing countertops in cooking space. If your kitchen cabinets have a natural wooden finish you can have the same for this island with a breakfast bar and create a rustic styled kitchen decor. In this case add wooden stools or chairs only instead of the trendy colorful bar stools. If your kitchen has a dual color theme, have two sets of bar stools to match the theme and line them in alternating colors. You can also have one color for the base of the island and another color for its countertop.
