Though an island counter should ideally blend with the rest of the design, there is no harm in giving it a dash of color to have it stand out a little. The idea is to strike a balance so that it looks like a part of the décor, yet has its own identity amid the rest of the kitchen.
Now, stationary islands are the best solution if your kitchen offers a larger space. This means that you can get in a full-sized island that perfectly works as a dining table as well. All you need is a nice glass or granite countertop and pendant lights suspended from the ceiling right above this breakfast bar. Of course adding up the dining essentials to the countertop needs no mention. Now line up the chairs and get set to enjoy your food right here! A style having half part dedicated for dining and half for other work also works well. In this case the dining corner can have an empty base that offers enough leg room while you sit on stools and dine here. Only the other half of the island can have drawers and shelves below it.
Kitchen islands are not only functional, in that they provide an additional working space in the kitchen, they are a great way to enhance the overall appeal of the area. Best suited to open kitchens that are L-shaped, they may also be great for those with a single counter. In an enclosed kitchen, one that is not so large, it may be more of a hindrance than a utility. In any case, island counters have the capacity to add the perfect aesthetic value to a kitchen that no amount of cabinetry or decoration will do. Here, we discuss some ideas, but not before learning about some basics.
If you need storage, opt for one with lots of drawers and closed shelves. The accessories to the island are also important, like a stove, sink, etc. Are you planning to place a microwave over it? Are you going to have stools around? One idea is to fix the electric switches and outlets for the appliances on the side walls of the island, which provide great convenience. Most of the time the exhaust hood is also included depending upon its usage.
These plans will definitely help you to beautify your kitchen. An island is surely the focal point of the kitchen and it gives a smart look to the entire area. So, making it the best and choosing an elegant design is essential.
Another way to design it is to use different materials to divide work surfaces. For instance, you could add a butcher‘s block (chopping board) that is a wooden surface on 1/4th of the island surface, and keep the remainder granite as a work surface. This not only serves dual purposes but also adds an element of interest.
